Woden Little Athletics Club is run entirely by volunteers. On competition days, there can be 300 or more children taking part in four or five events each. With twelve age groups each for boys and girls, this can be a colossal undertaking.
Parents must be prepared to help each Saturday morning to ensure everything runs smoothly and children obtain the maximum benefit from their events. We require parents to assist with a variety of tasks ranging from assisting at an event, being the manager of an age group, being a time keeper or helping in the canteen. Children appreciate the presence of their parents as officials. It is a family undertaking and it is an enjoyable and rewarding task if everyone does their share. You don't need any previous experience to be an official and there are a number of qualified and more experienced officials to help you out. Also, during the first few weeks of the season, familiarisation sessions for parents will be held to explain what is involved in officiating in the various track and field events.
A roster system is also used for ACTLAA Carnivals. Each club is expected to provide a quota of officials for each carnival and the Club requires a parent of each child participating at these carnivals to volunteer to officiate for at least two hours. In addition to conducting Club competition, there are a number of coordinating roles and off field duties that have to be done. These include Committee positions such as President and Treasurer and looking after fund raising, registrations, recording performances, awards, equipment, uniforms, the officials roster and the canteen.
Parents will be rostered to run the canteen each Saturday with the support and under the direction of the Club canteen coordinator. The roster is organised by age groups - matching older age groups with younger ones - leading to a mix of veteran and less-experienced parents running the canteen at any one time It will be up to the parents from the rostered age groups to organise themselves and report to the Canteen at the start of the meet, as close to 8:45am as possible please, and to assist with the clean up/reconciliation. Most age groups will be rostered four times during the season. The committee thanks you for your assistance!
Please mark all your child's belongings. There is a lost property basket in the equipment shed, which will be overflowing with misplaced items by the end of the season. Please check there for any missing items.
All registered athletes and those parents helping are covered by insurance while participating in Little Athletics activities. The officials manager records the names of those helping with events to ensure that they are covered by insurance. Please enter your name on the sheet provided.
In the event of wet weather, the ground will be inspected at around 8am on Saturday morning. If it is necessary to cancel a club meet, we will have a message on the home page of this website, on the mobile phone and we will try to have announcements on radio. If grounds have been closed by the ACT Government, there will be a message on the Sportsground Wet Weather Line (phone 6207 5957).
At Woden, it is our policy to provide a program every scheduled club meeting if possible. If the condition of the ground will not support the planned program, the club will organise an abbreviated program possibly built around sprints, training and limited field events.
